Ingredients

Chocolate Dough
  • 1 cup milk warmed to about 110°F
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 standard packet
  • 2 large eggs room temperature and lightly beaten
  • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter softened and cubed
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch-process or natural
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar for lightly sweetened dough
  • 1 teaspoon salt fine sea salt preferred
Peanut Butter Filling
  • 1 ¼ cups peanut butter creamy or crunchy gently warmed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar helps create a spreadable filling
  • 1 ¼ cups mini peanut butter cups roughly chopped
  • ½ cup heavy cream poured around rolls before baking
Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
  • 4 ounces cream cheese softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar sifted to prevent lumps
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure vanilla recommended
  • ¼ cup peanut butter melted for drizzling

Method

  1. Warm the milk to about 110°F, stir in the yeast with a small pinch of sugar, and let it stand until foamy, about 10 minutes.
  2. Combine the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer until evenly mixed.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, softened butter, and dry ingredients together, then knead with the dough hook until a smooth, soft dough forms, about 5 minutes.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. While the dough rises, chop the peanut butter cups into bite-sized pieces and set them aside.
  6. Roll the risen dough on a lightly floured surface into an approximately 18x20-inch rectangle about ¼ inch thick.
  7. Warm the peanut butter just enough to loosen it, stir in the granulated sugar until smooth, then spread the mixture evenly over the dough.
  8. Scatter the chopped peanut butter cups evenly across the peanut butter layer.
  9. Starting from the short edge, tightly roll the dough into a log and slice into 12 equal rolls with a serrated knife or unflavored dental floss.
  10. Arrange the rolls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, cover, and let them rise for about 20 minutes while the oven preheats to 375°F.
  11. Pour the heavy cream around the edges of the rolls without pouring directly over the tops.
  12. Bake for 28–33 minutes, or until the centers reach about 190°F and the tops are lightly set.
  13. Beat the softened butter and cream cheese until smooth, then mix in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla until fluffy.
  14. Spread the frosting over the warm rolls, drizzle with the melted peanut butter, and serve while still warm.
