Ingredients

Crust:
  • 1 store-bought pie crust or homemade if preferred
Filling:
  • 8 cups Granny Smith apples peeled cored and sliced Granny Smith apples are tart adding a nice contrast to the sweet filling
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice to prevent apples from browning
  • ¾ cup white sugar for sweetness
  • ¼ cup brown sugar adds a deeper flavor
  • ¼ cup flour helps thicken the filling
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon for warmth and spice
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg for a touch of warmth
Topping:
  • 1 cup flour for the crumble texture
  • ½ cup brown sugar adds richness to the topping
  • ½ cup white sugar for sweetness in the topping
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon for extra warmth
  • ½ cup cold butter cubed cold butter is essential for a crumbly topping

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Roll out the pie crust and place it into a 9-inch pie pan. Set it aside.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine all the filling ingredients and mix until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes to allow the apples to release excess moisture.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the topping ingredients. Use a fork or your fingers to mix until the butter forms small crumbs and the mixture resembles sand.
  5. Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared crust, then sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  7. Allow the pie to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream if desired.
