Ingredients

  • 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter melted used for greasing the ramekins
  • 4 large apples peeled and cut into chunky pieces (firm baking apples recommended)
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar adds moisture and caramel flavor to apples
  • teaspoon ground cinnamon for gentle warmth in the filling
  • teaspoon ground nutmeg adds subtle spice depth
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar sweetens and crisps the topping
  • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour provides structure for the crumble
  • 1 ⅓ teaspoons ground cinnamon balances sweetness in topping
  • teaspoon salt enhances overall flavor
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter melted and slightly cooled binds the crumb topping
  • Optional ice cream or caramel sauce for serving and added indulgence

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and arrange eight 6-ounce ramekins on a sturdy baking sheet.
  2. Lightly coat the inside of each ramekin with melted butter, ensuring the sides and bottom are covered.
  3. In a large bowl, toss the apple chunks with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated.
  4. Spoon the apple mixture evenly into the prepared ramekins, gently pressing them down.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt for the topping.
  6. Drizzle in the melted butter and stir gently with a fork until large, crumbly clusters form.
  7. Scatter the crumble topping over the apples, lightly pressing it down so it fits without compacting.
  8. Bake for 32–36 minutes, until the topping turns golden and the apples underneath are tender.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool briefly before serving warm, with optional ice cream or caramel.

Notes

These cozy apple crumbles are best enjoyed warm, when the topping is crisp and the fruit is perfectly tender. The aroma alone feels like an autumn memory, even if you bake them in the middle of summer.
